I normally don’t like HR with villains and a lot of external conflict like a lot of 90s ones but the more sensational elements of it just felt like a quirky Charles Dickens story and the focus was still on the romance. I thought the enemies to lovers tension was just as good as Lord of Scoundrels, and there was possibly even more tenderness and sweet sweet lovin’ □. Hero that completely adores the heroine and is grumpy for everyone except her? Snarky headstrong heroine who takes none of his shit? It played into old romance tropes to perfection. The atmosphere was fantastic, the plot was unusual without straining disbelief and the chemistry? I was literally sighing and grinning stupidly throughout. I got the audiobook read by Kate Reading which perfectly captured the characters and was totally entranced. I’d avoided this because of the cheesy title and Loretta Chase being a hit or miss author for me but this book absolutely SLAYED me.
